With experience of picking and packing, Keiren wasn’t sure he could easily change tracks into Britain’s oldest transport industry. His Steps To Work Job Coach, Kerry, could see that with support, Keiren could kickstart a new career as a Tram Driver which he successfully has and is now working towards his first pay rise.
Initially, Keiren undertook skills training with a dedicated tutor and scored top marks at his final mock interview session. Within a month, Serco’s Employer Engagement Team had found a potential fit at West Midlands Metro, sparking an undiscovered interest in the sector for Keiren. He attended a formal interview for the role and the feedback received from the tram operator was electric. Keiren was their best performing candidate.
He was now on the fast train and didn’t want to stop at simply proving his capability for the role. Keiren continued to attend sessions with his Skills Coach to complete assessments for the job, plus engaged in additional support sessions, all in preparation for his start date in early October.
Kerry concludes: “Keiren is proof that the Restart Scheme can reset people’s expectations of themselves. Within a month, with the right encouragement, training and a lot of hard work from Keiren, he has jumped from surviving off minimum wage jobs, to thriving in career that not only excites him but offers job security, room for development, and competitive benefits.”
