Julia was referred to the Inspiring Families programme with Catch 22 for employment support. Inspiring Families is an initiative designed to help individuals facing multiple and complex family issues to get back into work. It is funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund. Catch22 is part of Serco’s network of expert organisations chosen to deliver this programme on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.
Upon meeting her advisor, Dilan, she was surprised at just how much support was available to her.
Julia had low confdence, due to having left an abusive relationship and having to start her life over again with her young son. To add to her barriers, English is Julia’s second language, which was a struggle for her.
Julia says she felt comfortable around Dilan and he gave her the positive push she needed to realise her potential. Dilan began Julia’s support with some one-to-one confdence building sessions, which included some motivational talking, understanding British culture, self-confidence, and encouraging her to see that she was capable of securing a good role. Julia felt that she was not good enough, as she was not experienced, but Dilan explained to her that attitude is also important to employers.
Julia’s goal was to find an administration role. After the one-to-one support, Dilan carried out job search with Julia, as well as offering her interview technique sessions. Dilan then secured her an interview as a Sales Assistant with a
start-up company which heavily involved administration. Although Julia enjoyed the role, after eight months, the employer ended up selling his business and moving away from London which left Julia unemployed once again.
Within a month Dilan had worked on Julia’s confdence once again and had secured her another interview through the ‘Connect With Work’ programme. This interview was with another start-up company, as Business Admin Assistant, and she was successful. Julia was very excited but nervous and called Dilan who invited her to the Catch 22 office to offer her some support before she started her new role.
Julia says, thanks to Dilan, she has found her ‘dream job’ and is ‘very happy’ as without the support from him, she would never be the person she is today. The support given to her was totally different to anywhere she had ever been and is incredibly thankful to Dilan.
