Adam's life took a challenging turn when he found himself dealing with a difficult child custody battle, ultimately leading to his unemployment. Now a single parent, Adam was eager to return to work but was realistic about the challenges ahead, particularly in balancing childcare responsibilities. Along with these challenges, Adam faced potential discrimination due to his deafness.
In April 2024, Adam joined the Restart Scheme, determined to rebuild his life. Adam was assigned Nicola Linney from COPA Training as his Job Coach. Although Adam was confident in his ability to search for jobs, he recognised that job hunting required a specific skill set, and he welcomed the support offered by the Restart Scheme.
Eager to make the most of the opportunity, Adam actively participated in sessions with Nicola and the employer engagement coordinator. Nicola thoroughly reviewed Adam’s CV, ensuring it was polished and effective. Together, they developed a strategic plan to help Adam re-enter the workforce. The employer engagement coordinator assisted Adam with realistic job goals and supported with techniques for job applications, boosting his confidence.
As Adam engaged more with the Restart Scheme, his confidence grew. Adam was provided with a smart phone and laptop, so that he could effectively search and apply for jobs, communicate with employers and complete online training courses.
Adam began applying for more jobs, fuelled by the vision of a better future for himself and his children. His determination paid off when he secured employment as a cleaner.
However, Adam faced new challenges with limited public transportation and the need to manage his time carefully due to childcare responsibilities. Understanding his situation, COPA Training stepped in to support him.
They provided Adam with a hybrid bike, a helmet, a phone holder, and a vibrating alarm clock - tools that proved essential for his early morning shifts.
With his new bike, Adam could access his workplace easily and efficiently, allowing him to balance his duties as a single father with his job. His enthusiasm and dedication didn’t go unnoticed, and as a result, his working hours were increased.
Adam’s positive experience with employment has inspired him to explore further opportunities. He is now applying for a second job as a food delivery driver, confident that with his hybrid bike and the support of his brother, who can help with childcare, he can successfully manage both roles.
