David starts working as a School Cleaner after 15 years of unemployment

18th Jan 2024 Restart Scheme

David, a single father, has been out of the workforce since 2008, dedicating his time to raising his young children. Despite numerous attempts to re-enter the job market, he has found it difficult to secure interviews, which has impacted his self-confidence.

Joining the Restart Scheme, David was assigned Stacey Hart from Standguide as his Job Coach. On arrival at the Restart Scheme office, David said he felt welcomed by Stacey and that the environment and activity seemed positive.

Although David has been keen to secure paid work and has been very open to exploring alternative avenues of work, there are significant gaps in his CV owing to his childcare responsibilities. David is aware of this and finds it frustrating that potential employers perceive him as a ‘risk’ as he cannot evidence his ability and suitability through references and work experience as others in continued employment might. The Restart Scheme has worked closely with David to ensure he maintains a consistent approach to seeking paid work through continuous engagement with his Job Coach.

David has attended several ‘Employability Skills’ sessions and has attended several job fairs hosted by Standguide, Jobcentre Plus and others. In early October, David’s Job Coach introduced him to Employment Advisor Kevin Rust, who had been talking to a national employer about placing Restart Scheme candidates into paid work at short notice. Kevin noted David’s desire to work and discussed a School Cleaner role with him, arranging for an interview for David to attend.

As a result of his hard work, David was offered the role and is now set to start working as a School Cleaner after 15 years of unemployment. Well done David!
