Language barrier doesn’t stop Amir* from getting a full-time position through the Restart Scheme

22nd Jul 2022 Restart Scheme

Despite a having a degree in Aerodynamics from Iran, Amir* struggled to find work. He had moved to the UK 3 years ago and had been living in shared accommodation. With English not being his first language, Amir lacked confidence speaking with people due to struggling with the language barrier.

When Izaaq – his Job Coach from Ingeus - met with Amir, he could see he had ability from his qualifications and that he was passionate to get back into work. Amir had been applying for lots of jobs but had been focussing on just one industry and was continually being rejected. This, coupled with him not being able to communicate as well as he could in his native language, led to him lacking in self-confidence.

Izaaq discussed transferable skills with Amir and advised him to broaden his job search to include other industries. He also helped him to tailor his CV for different roles and did some pre-screening for an interview. Once this was done and an interview was secured, Izaaq helped with interview preparation both face-to-face and over the phone and this gave Amir the confidence that his English was at a good standard, and he could sell himself at the interview.

Amir was living in shared accommodation but really wanted to have his own place. Izaaq sat down with Amir and talked him through the benefits of working full-time and that this could lead to him living independently. Amir was even more determined to get a full-time job!

Izaaq said:

‘I believed in him and therefore I wanted him to believe in himself’

As a result of all the preparation and practise, the interview was a success and Amir managed to land a full-time role in the automotive industry.
