Mark joined the Restart Scheme in May 2023, where Christina Lewis from Seetec Pluss was assigned as his Job Coach. Mark was initially hesitant to embrace the Restart Scheme, which presented a challenge for Christina as his attendance was sporadic.
Upon connecting with Mark, Christina discovered his deep frustration about not being able to afford a course that would reignite his passion and previous role. Previously a Slinger/Signaller (working alongside crane operators), changes in government regulations had hindered his ability to continue in that field. Determined to make a positive impact, Christina set a clear goal of building trust and ensuring Mark had the support to re-enter the workforce.
In their first face-to-face meeting, the duo set a goal to reintegrate Mark into the workforce by the end of December. A comprehensive review highlighted that the only barrier to Mark's success was the required training – a Red CPCS (Consumer Product Safety Commission) course and card, costing around £1000.
With the backing of her manager, Christina committed to organising the course for Mark, contingent on him meeting specific milestones. Researching the course together, they carefully planned every detail, with the condition that Mark maintained regular contact and attendance at scheduled meetings. Mark enthusiastically agreed to the terms.
Over the next 1.5 months, they meticulously researched and identified the perfect course in Preston starting in December 2023. Mark, eager to reclaim his professional identity, immersed himself in various activities within their offices to enhance his knowledge and skills. He attended weekly JAGs (Job Action Groups), engaged with NCS (National Citizen Service), and attended Multiply sessions to boost his numeracy skills.
Recognising the logistical challenges of a 2-3 hour train journey to Preston, Christina arranged and covered the expenses for Mark's travel and accommodation. This support, aimed at reducing Mark's travel time, drew immense gratitude from him. Mark attended the course for 3 days in December, excelling and earning his Red CPCS the week after Christmas.
During their last meeting, Mark shared the news of securing a Slinger/Signaller job, which started in January 2024. Two VEX vouchers were also provided to Mark during the last few months supported Mark with essential work items, including new boots, high-visibility clothing, and a basic uniform.
While the initial goal of getting Mark back to work before January was achieved, it's the remarkable dedication Mark displayed throughout his Restart Scheme journey that truly stands out. His hard work has led him to a place where he can now provide for his two young children, whilst unemployed. The collaborative effort between Mark and Christina has not only secured his employment but has also set the stage for continued success and an improved quality of life.
