Single Dad takes control of his life for himself and his daughter in Hereford

Due to serious dependency, Dave* was unable to attend meetings with his Reed in Partnership Job Coach, Sam, ultimately leading to mandation to attend. But Sam was determined for this to not set the tone for their future meetings. He worked hard to create a neutral, non-judgemental environment where Dave could feel safe to openly share about his struggles and explore suitable work that met his needs. Sam says:

"I encouraged him to keep attending his meetings with his recovery. Due to certain circumstances, he had to take over parental duties for his daughter which sparked a confidence within himself to make improvements for his health. We gradually developed a relationship where Dave felt empowered to believe in his own abilities and able to highlight the progress he has made with his recovery."

An opportunity to start work within the construction sector presented itself, and provided Dave with an immediate start date, income and no requirement to acquire a CSCS Card. Sam encouraged Dave to take the "bull by the horns" and make the call from the office there and then. The employer, aware of his situation, offered Dave the job in January and Sam subsequently arranged financial support to see Dave through to his first pay day, as well as funding for a pair of steel toe-capped work boots.

Dave continues to receive regular in-work support where he is encouraged to reach out whenever needed for advice or guidance to relieve any pressure points. Dave says:

"I was so relieved l got the offer of a job and the boots to do it in as well!

I’m so grateful [for] my new ability to support myself and my daughter."
