Phil Lewis - Programme Manager, School Business Professional Apprenticeship

Name : Phil Lewis

What do you do?

Programme Manager for School Business Professional Apprenticeship

What did you do before this role?

I was a Contract Manager for an EU funded Technology project across Cornwall and Isles of Scilly

What are you working on right now?

Currently looking at recruitment for new coaches as Covid-19 has called most of my school based coaches away onto other projects.

What’s the best thing about your role?

The best thing about my role is getting out to the workshops to meet all the learners, since joining I have been out to 3 LSS Workshops and have planned in coming out to more down the line.  Witnessing and being a part of people’s development is key for me.

When not working, what do you like to do?

In the rare times I’m not logged on, I spend a lot of time with my two boys (2 and 4) and Chip O’Lata (my sausage dog) … I suppose my wife should get a mention too J.  Outside of this I’m a keen golfer so try and spend as much time hitting a small ball around a big field as much as I can (I am also studying for a Degree in Business Management and International Economics, but the question asked what I “liked” doing)

If you could have a conversation with a historical figure who would it be?

I’m a massive nerd when it comes to science and space, so it would have to be Stephen Hawking for me

What does a typical day involve?

No two days are the same so it’s a difficult question to answer.  It’s usually full of calls with coaches/facilitators/suppliers, along with ploughing through queries from 130+ learners.  I could be sending out assessment results one day to spending the next 4 days on the road going to workshops and meeting stakeholders

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

As much as my wife would probably disagree, but not being afraid to fail is probably the best advice I’ve been given, that and “if you don’t learn from it, it’s not worth doing!”

If you could send a message to yourself as a child, what would you say?

Just keep going and that the Dominican Republic is the most beautiful place you’ll go before you’re 35
