Berhane is from Sudan and has been in England for two years. He has no family In England and spoke no English. Berhane had worked on demolition sites in Sudan and was used to hard work and long hours.
Joining the Restart Scheme, Berhane was assigned Fiona Ormsby from the Shaw Trust as his Job Coach. As a native Sudanese speaker, translation services were used for Berhane during his first 3 months on the scheme. Actions were set for Berhane to listen to radio channels to practice his speaking English speaking skills, as well as to watch YouTube videos with Arabic subtitles. For each face-to-face review, Berhane was challenged to learn three conversational sentences in English to build his confidence. Interim review meetings were held face to face as well as action plan reviews and diagnostics.
Berhane would also bring his ESOL College course work with him as part of his actions set, which was supported as part of the scheme. Berhane committed to the Restart Scheme and after three months, meetings were conducted in English with no translator. This was successful and Berhane went on to complete his CSCS Green Card, with his confidence and motivation continuing to grow.
Fiona provided a lot of praise and support for each milestone Berhane achieved, giving positive and effective feedback. Fiona put Berhane in contact with a CSCS training provider, through which he gained a CSCS qualification. Berhane also received CV support through the National Careers Service.
