Being made reductant from her hotel job during the pandemic had put a strain on Michelle's finances and forced her and her daughter to move into shared housing. Tired of the verbal abuse from housemates and their drug addiction, Michelle was determined to find work and secure a stable home for herself and her daughter. Though, she did worry that a lack of qualifications would limit her opportunities and without savings she wouldn’t be able to afford to travel to work, even if she secured employment.
She went to her local Jobcentre Plus, and was referred onto the Restart Scheme, a programme which helps jobseekers to overcome their barriers to find sustainable employment. With support from PeoplePlus, who deliver the scheme in Michelle’s local area, she managed to secure an interview for a Kitchen Porter role at Prezzo in Cardiff. It was a great opportunity, as the full-time job meant she would gain qualifications in health and safety, hygiene and food safety. But she needed to pay upfront for anti-slip shoes to meet the uniform requirement and the job was a train ride away.
As well as providing coaching and being an emotional crutch during household episodes, Lee, Michelle’s Job Coach said he could cover the cost of the tickets up to her first pay day and help purchase anti-slip shoes. Michelle was elated she could accept the role and Lee maintained regular contact with her to make sure she settled into her new role.
Michelle says: “I’m very grateful. I really wouldn’t have been able to get back to work without your help. You also really supported me when I was going through the verbal abuse. Since getting this job I’m not restricted to do as many things as I was beforehand. I could afford to have a lovely Christmas and spoil my daughter with plenty of gifts! I loved seeing her face when opening them. I can also finally fix my phone and get the flat I’ve really wanted. It’s so exciting!”
Lee adds: “Michelle is now at a point where she’s extremely proud of herself and can work towards getting her flat. Well done, Michelle!”
