Tyler secures IT Role through the Restart Scheme

22nd May 2024 Restart Scheme

Tyler had never been in employment before and was having trouble finding his first job. Tyler had multiple IT qualifications and aspired to secure a job in the IT industry but was struggling due to a lack of confidence and experience working.

Joining the Restart Scheme in July 2023, Tyler was assigned Alex Youlden from Steps to Work as his Job Coach. To boost Tyler's confidence and refine his skill set, Alex arranged a mock interview for him with Ayesha Rees, Managing Director of Steps to Work.

Recognising Tyler's lack of prior interview experience and his nervousness, preparations were made for another mock interview, this time facilitated by Emma Denaro, Office Manager at Steps to Work. Drawing insights from the job description, Emma tailored the mock interview to align with the specific role, ensuring Tyler was ready to address potential interview questions. After the mock interview, Emma provided Tyler with constructive feedback.

As a result of his hard work and the help from the Restart Scheme, Tyler was invited to an in-person interview for a first-line support position at Walsall Council. Drawing from the mock interview preparation, Tyler performed exceptionally well on the interview and was offered the role.

Filled with enthusiasm, Tyler is now starting his career journey in the IT industry. Tyler expressed profound gratitude to everyone at Steps to Work who supported him throughout this transformative journey, particularly acknowledging the invaluable guidance of his Job Coach Alex.

Emma said:
“Encouraging Tyler to articulate specific skills and talents aligning with the job requirements, his dedication to improvement is evident. Finding a balance between his reserved nature and showcasing enthusiasm is key, and Tyler's progress suggests he's on the right track. Overall, Tyler's efforts and achievements in securing his dream job are a testament to his resilience and commitment to personal and professional growth.”

“I met Tyler during one of my participants 1:1 session, which is something I set up to get to know individuals, understanding their skills, experiences and barriers so STW can shape our provision accordingly. It was clear to me during my meeting with Tyler that he had a lot to offer an employer but needed to see in himself the way Alex and I saw him. As such Alex and Emma supported with interview and confidence skills. I am delighted that Tyler has been able to fulfil his ambition of securing a role in IT.”
