Restart Scheme

Khadra regains confidence and skills thanks to the Restart Scheme

3rd Feb 2025 Restart Scheme

Khadra joined the Restart Scheme in July 2024 with Seetec Plus in Birmingham. When Khadra first joined, she was facing multiple challenges: she was homeless, her mental health was suffering, and she struggled with English, which added to her barriers in navigating everyday life.

Khadra was assigned Karen Meisiah from Seetec as her Job Coach. The first challenge Karen focused on was securing housing for Khadra. Recognising that stable accommodation was critical to her wellbeing, Karen worked with Birmingham City Council to find a solution. She persistently followed up and determined not to leave any stone unturned, remained on the phone with the council until Khadra was finally placed into suitable housing. This was a transformative step for Khadra, providing her with the stability she needed to move forward.

With a roof over her head, the next focus was building Khadra’s confidence in English. Karen enrolled her in weekly ESOL sessions delivered at Seetec. Over the course, Khadra began to show remarkable improvement. Her language skills developed quickly, which in turn boosted her self-confidence. This newfound confidence led Khadra to engage in conversations about employment opportunities and what career paths she might explore.

Khadra’s mental health also began to improve significantly. While securing housing and increasing her language skills made a positive impact, Karen also referred Khadra to Seetec's online Health & Wellbeing program, ensuring she had additional support for her emotional wellbeing.

Now feeling more empowered, Khadra has taken another big step towards her career goals. She recently completed an information session and has enrolled in training with Embark Care, where she is working towards a care qualification. Once completed, she is set to interview for a care role, with the potential for employment within the next 8 weeks.

This remarkable progress has all taken place within just over two months. Khadra’s resilience, combined with support provided by Karen, has been truly inspiring. We are excited to see what the next phase of her journey will bring as she works towards securing her dream role in the care sector.
