Serco Restart Scheme Staff Continue Volunteering With Local Schools

10th Jul 2024 Restart Scheme

The Serco Restart Scheme has been actively involved in community engagement this year, particularly focusing on educational support within local schools. The team has so far conducted one social mobility session with many more to follow in 2024.

In the team’s most recent visit, employees from the Restart Scheme devoted a day to volunteer at Adamsdown Primary School in Cardiff and St John’s & St Peter’s CE Academy in Birmingham, where they carried out their workshop on networking and communication. During this workshop, both the staff and pupils engaged in reading a book and subsequently discussed their learnings.

In the next activity, the students enacted the role of business professionals and created their own networking cards, emphasising their abilities and communication skills. The team additionally highlighted the significance of creating a favourable initial impression, which included keeping eye contact, standing upright, articulating distinctly, and smiling.

A networking session concluded the session, where students used networking cards to introduce themselves. The day of volunteering was successful, with 54 first and second-year students in total participating in the event.

In May, we advanced our school strategy, with Suki Gill, Social Value Lead for the Restart Scheme, conducting mock interview sessions for Year 10 and Year 12 students at Dame Elizabeth Cadbury's School in Birmingham. This marks the fourth secondary school session we have delivered in 2024 as part of our commitment to supporting local schools. Our goal is to inspire students to aspire to and achieve their life goals, instilling confidence and motivation to pursue any career path they choose through hard work and determination.

To further support this initiative, the Restart Scheme will be engaging with three additional secondary schools in the third quarter of the year.
